Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Béart, Fanny Ardant and the others return to Chérie 25.
If you like women, theater and Cluedo
Christmas, in the 1950s. Everyone is getting ready to start the festivities when suddenly a tragedy occurs: the master of the house is found murdered. The culprit is among the eight women the victim frequented: his wife? Her daughter ? Her maid? The investigation can then begin.
Chérie 25 will rebroadcast this evening 8 Women, the thriller of François Ozon which attracted 3.5 million spectators to cinemas in 2002. The director had long wanted to make a feature film starring only women (and which women!): Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, Emmanuelle Béart, Fanny Ardant, Virginie Ledoyen, Danielle Darrieux…). He was inspired by the eponymous play written by Robert Thomas to concoct this wickedly funny investigation.
Excerpts from our review, signed Christophe Carrièrepublished at the time in First :
“The basic plot, located between Agatha Christie and the board game Cluedo, quickly falls into the inventory of small family hypocrisies. Nothing is as it seems and, between two traps and three unboxings, Ozon plays on coherence crazy by inserting a not-so-pourri medley: Béart sings from Corinne Charby, Huppert from Françoise Hardy, Ledoyen from Marie Laforêt… Of course, we know the song. But the recital embedded with the film offers the rediscovery of performers we thought we had made the rounds, endorsing Ozon's reputation – a great director of actresses, therefore.”
François Ozon: “Danielle Darrieux was the embodiment of the paradoxical actress”
