Samuel L. Jackson didn’t think he could honor his contract with Marvel
“How long do you have to be alive to make nine films?”
In the MCU, Samuel L. Jackson plays Nick Fury. And this since 2008, when he appeared for the first time as a cameo in Iron Man. He was shaping up to be a crucial character and that was proven later. From now on, it has thirteen films and two series on the clock – the last of which are respectively The Marvels And Secret Invasion where he is at the heart of the plot.
Fifteen years later, the 75-year-old actor said he initially signed on for nine films with Marvel. A contract he didn’t think he could honor during his lifetime. In an interview given to GQ, the actor of pulp Fiction returned to its emblematic characters and spent a few minutes on the founder of the Avengers:
“Kevin Feige told me ‘We’re going to offer you a nine-movie deal.’ How long do you have to be alive to make nine films? It’s not the fastest process in the world. I didn’t know they would make nine films in two and a half years. It’s a bit crazy!”
However, after the end of this contract, which ended with Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson has had a series of Marvel productions. Does he miss arthouse films? In 2022, interviewed by the LA Times, he admitted that he would rather play Nick Fury than win Oscars:
“I don’t want to let the Academy of Oscars decide whether my career is a success or a failure. My criterion of success is my happiness: am I satisfied with what I do? I don’t make films to chase statuettes . “If you make this movie, you’ll win an Oscar!” No, thank you. I’d rather play Nick Fury or have fun being Mace Windu!

Attached to Marvel, the actor has also defended these films on several occasions as well as the actors who play the superheroes whom he considers in the same way as other actors like movie stars, in the face of filmmakers who denigrate them.
Happier than ever to be part of this universe, he shared during the interview with GQ his favorite moment:
“In Captain America and the Winter Soldier and Nick is in the car. He’s quintessential Nick Fury. Don’t panic. He is calm, analyzing, thinking about his next move (…) He is badass, really badass.”
Will Samuel L. Jackson return to play the iconic character? Recently, he raised his voice against the use of artificial intelligence on the sets of the MCU, and the appropriation of his face by technology. What if it was no longer him who played Nick Fury, but an AI? No need then to wonder if he would still be alive to fulfill his contract.
