The Mummy 4 is confirmed! Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz will go on an adventure again
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who released Scream from formalin, will try to do the same thing with the thousands-year-old Egyptian creature…
More than 20 years after their last adventure, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are back.
The cult duo of The Mummy is about to reunite for a fourth film in the saga, still produced by Universal.
The project The Mummy 4 will be entrusted to the tandem Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, aka Radio Silencethe directors of Ready or Not (2019) and the reboot of Scream for Paramount in 2022. Enough to give hope for a return to basics as energetic as it is inventive. Universal, for the moment, has made no official comment.
Released in 1999, the first opus had transformed Brendan Fraser into a true star of the adventure film, mixing action, humor and thrills. Alongside Rachel Weisz, he played Rick O’Connell, a daredevil explorer who accidentally wakes a vengeful mummy in 1920s Egypt. The film was a triumph at the worldwide box office, grossing $416 million on a budget of around $80 million.
Its sequel, The Return of the Mummy (2001), had done even stronger, with 435 million dollars in revenue worldwide.
But for the third part, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008), filmed in China with Jet Li, actress Rachel Weisz refused to return and Maria Bello replaced her. Which did not prevent the film from grossing $403 million.
Universal tried, in 2017, to relaunch a franchise with Tom Cruise in a remake supposed to open its “Dark Universe”. The critical and commercial failure of the film immediately buried the project. That being said, horror studio Blumhouse recently embarked on its vision of the creature and will be released in theaters next year The Mummy, by Lee Cronin, which will feature Jack Reynor, star of Midsommarin the role of a father confronted with terrifying supernatural forces…
Nothing to do with Rick O’Connell, then. Brendan Fraser, who has enjoyed a spectacular renaissance with The Whale (2022), a role which earned him the Oscar for best actor in recent years, will therefore be entitled to a new journey, something the star has been calling for for years. The adventurer and his eternal accomplice Evelyn will be back. It remains to be seen for what story? Perhaps their son, Alex, very present in the second opus, will also be back…
