Cannes 2026: first image of Maika Monroe in Victorian Psycho

The addition of Paper Tiger by James Gray in the competition for the Palme d’Or has joined the American contingent at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. But it is not the only one. In addition to the official selection announced this Wednesday evening, there is another film from Uncle Sam’s country: Victorian Psychowhich will be presented in Un Certain Regard.

As the title suggests, Victorian Psycho takes place in the Victorian era (roughly England in the second part of the 19th century, under the reign of Queen Victoria), and follows a governess who hides her psychopathic tendencies by getting hired at a mansion. Soon, the house staff begins to disappear. And the owner realizes too late that she has probably poisoned them…

Margaret Qualley was originally to play the governess in the third feature film by Zachary Wigon (who had already directed her in Submission), for which A24 had acquired the rights. Ultimately, she had to abandon the project for scheduling reasons and was replaced by Maika Monroe, the scream queen of It Follows And Longlegsthen joined by Thomasin McKenzie (Last Night in Soho) and Jason Isaacs. A24 also withdrew, and Bleecker Street picked up the project.

Victorian Psycho is adapted from the eponymous novel by Virginia Feito, who wrote the screenplay. The film will be released at the start of the school year in the United States; it does not yet have a distributor in France.
