Cillian Murphy swears her next role will be non-smoking
After Oppenheimer and Peaky Blinders the film, the actor would like to no longer touch a cigarette while filming.
“I smoked so many fake cigarettes on Peakythen on this film, confided this summer Cillian Murphy At Guardian. My next character will not be a smoker. Because it does us no good. Even herbal cigarettes have health warnings now.”
By signing on to play the lead role ofOppenheimerCillian Murphy knew he would once again often appear with a cigarette in his mouth, after six seasons playing Tommy Shelby in the hit series Peaky Blinders. It was tobacco addiction that killed Robert J. Oppenheimer, who succumbed to lung cancer in 1967. So the 47-year-old Irish actor made this decision: once the film ended the series filmed, he will sign on for a role as a non-smoker.
Since playing Tommy, Cillian Murphy has actually smoked thousands of cigarettes on camera. “I asked the guy in charge of props how many cigarettes we smoked in a season, and he said: ‘About 3000.’“he revealed to Birmingham Live in 2019. Knowing that the show lasts six seasons, this represents a total of 18,000 cigarettes spread over nine years: the show started in 2013 and its last season was broadcast in 2022.
Even if he does not smoke nicotine cigarettes, but herbal cigarettes, consuming such a large number of them can still be dangerous for his health. Besides, Murphy is not the only one to worry about this bad habit of one of his recurring characters.
