Metal Gear Solid could finally go to the cinema with the directors of Final Destination

Hollywood has been trying to bring Hideo Kojima’s game to the screen for years. Without success. But this time, Sony Pictures seems determined…

Nearly 40 years after its creation, Hideo Kojima’s cult saga is finally preparing to hit the big screen. Sony Pictures is developing an event film around Metal Gear Solida legendary video game franchise that had never before been adapted for cinema.

At the helm: Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, directors of Final Destination: Bloodlinesare responsible for bringing this universe to life for the Columbia Pictures label. The duo is fresh off the surprise success of the latest installment of the horror saga, which relaunched the franchise with more than $315 million at the worldwide box office.

For Sony, the bet is clear but not easy to achieve. We must transform Metal Gear Solid into a major blockbuster. The project will be produced by Avi Arad and Ari Arad, well-known figures in adaptations of video game and comics licenses. Basically, Metal Gear Solidit’s a military infiltration under pressure: a special forces agent tasked with destroying a weapon of mass destruction capable of launching nuclear strikes. A perfect playground for a film between espionage, action and technological paranoia.

The project is part of a global agreement between Sony and the Lipovsky / Stein duo, who are already developing several films for the studio. Among them: an animated feature film around Venomas well as an original science fiction project, The Earthling.

“As long-time fans of the game, we are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life.”explain the two directors. “We share Sony’s vision of creating true event films for cinema.”

We will still remember that this is not the first time that Metal Gear Solid must become a film. In 2020, Oscar Isaac was even officially cast to play Solid Snake in a feature film to be directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island). The latter therefore handed over to the duo of Final Destination. We do not yet know if Isaac is still expected in the casting.
