Mickey 17: How Robert Pattinson said yes to Bong Joon-Ho
The star and the director of Parasite tell of their SF satire on the cover of the first.
After David Cronenberg, James Gray, Christopher Nolan or the Safdie brothers, Robert Pattinson added a new author name to its prestigious hunting board: Bong Joon-Ho. The director is finally back in the cinema, six years after the golden palm of Parasiteand he chose the star of The Batman To embody the hero of Mickey 17. A new social and anti -capitalist satire on a worker of cloned space and reprinted to the envy, who trips and dies on a frozen planet exploited by a private society.
In the new issue of Firstcurrently in newsstands, Robert Pattinson and Bong Joon-Ho We reveal the behind the scenes of this crazy SF blockbuster released in the cinema this Wednesday, March 5 in France. And they tell us how they have “chosen” to carry out this ultra ambitious project, where we also come across Mark Rufallo, Toni Collette, Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun and Anamaria Vartolomei.
“”Bong seemed to me … totally out of reach!“, says Pattinson, who embodies all the versions of Mickey in the film.”Then I crossed the road to Jeremy Kleiner, from Plan B (the production company of Brad Pitt), who told me that Bong Joon-Ho was preparing a new film and wanted to meet me. I was in a particular situation: after The Batman, I found nothing excited, I had refused a lot of proposals for a long time … Then there were strikes, the industry started. The prospect of working with Bong Joon-Ho could not therefore fall better.“”
“”I did not know anything about the film he was preparing, but I was going to the appointment with already wanting to accept his proposal! We got to know each other, he was very funny, very nice. I then read Edward Ahston’s book (Mickey7), which he wanted to adapt. But when I received the script for the film, I was totally confused. Read the book, you will see: the tone of the film has nothing to do, it’s really day and night. The script was completely crazy, delusional and unexpected. It took me a while to understand what happened to me. Then I told myself that it may be an opportunity for me to do a performance, let’s say … at the Jim Carrey! (Laughs.)“”
The collaboration between the actor and the director has borne fruit (Mickey 17 is by far the best Hollywood film by Bong Joon-Ho), and their complicity was also obvious during the promotion of the film, especially during their visit to Seoul where they both tasted the Korean Street Food between two interviews. Bong explains to us why Pattinson was the ideal choice for this multiple character:
“”The role required a duality. Someone capable of going from the mickey 17 pitiful and slightly stupid to the mickey 18 maniac but charismatic, explains the director. Robert was my first choice. I immediately knew that his energy, his game, would persuade the public“”
